I took a slow trip to Araluen and back, stopping several nights, and searching for good stopping spots to use in the future. . Bent's Basin Campground is in the NSW State Conservation Area near Penrith. Less than two hours from home, it's a great stopping place if I want to make an early start south the next day. Half an hour from Campbelltown. Telephone booking the night before gave me the number for the security gate. I inspected all the rest areas between Wingello and Goulburn with a view to their suitability for sleepovers. Mackey VC Rest Area is rather too small for anything other than necessity; tho there are some good stone sculptures for sale in the adjacent paddock. Kingsbury VC Rest Area allows camping in the surrounding forest. Derrick VC Rest Area is prettier than Kingsbury, and has history, but it's not as extensive. Finally, I looked for van parks in Goulburn. Goulburn South went home early and didn't answer their phone. Governor's Hill Carpark turned out to be small and full, but they were friendly and kind and found me a place to squeeze in between three siblings from the USA and a miner from Queensland. I also found out that the Loaded Dog Hotel at Tarago has camping. Must stay here sometime! On my return northwards I paid a return visit to the Wingello State Forest. Bargo is another place I intend investigating.
