I was excited when Bouddi Peninsula Arts Trail asked me to return to Wagstaffe for the October long weekend. Lavinia Smith-Lewis kindly invited me to share some space inside The Wharf Gallery, so I was set for the rain (notice the large puddle in the centre foreground) as well as having a great place to park close to Wagstaffe Store. The B.A.M. setup worked brilliantly, with undercover display space at the side and at the back, behind-glass display in the cabin, and a spot for sort box and business cards on the picnic table. I can see myself doing this again, and further from home. Artist Statement
Gillian Perrett lived at Wagstaffe between 2001 and 2018. While living there she completed a BA in Fine Art, then continued to develop her personal art practice. She uses mixed media to reflect on the transience of experience and the insubstantiality of the immediate environment. She is currently investigating plants that grow from mud, such as mangroves and waterlilies. * * * Having moved to Gosford, I am delighted that Lavinia Lewis invited me to share space in The Wharf Gallery this weekend, and that I can take the opportunity to introduce Bertha to the local community. Bertha, my van, provides transportation, holiday accommodation and a travelling studio in my new downsized life. This is her first occasion as a pop-up gallery. Besides new works about plants that exist on the margins and miscellaneous small works, I am showing more of my mirror works that use local Bouddi pigments to speak of the transience of perception. I also present the beginning of a new project that moves my ideas about change and insubstantiality into three-dimensional works.

It all began, chatting with a friend while we were collecting unsold works at the end of a recent exhibition. She told me she was "doing the markets" in the Hunter. She said she had a station wagon and used garden mesh to hang pictures from. This got me thinking that I could do the same. Here's the process that unfolded over a couple of weeks. Ali booked herself and the kids into an AirB&B house just half an hour from my flat. There was room for Bertha on the nature strip in front of the house. |
AuthorIn mid 2018 I started recording each night I sleep in Bertha: sometimes just for myself, sometimes to share with friends and other travellers. Archives
