Not far to drive, but worth every one of 25 minutes to spend time with adult kids and grand kids and lots of their friends. The third year in a row, so it's a tradition now to spend the last week of January at the NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Resort.

Buladelah used to be a dreadful bottleneck on the Pacific Highway. Now that the M1 bypass is in operation, it's back to being a delightful country town. And it's the first country town north of the Sydney-Central Coast-Newcastle 'conurban spread', an ideal place to pause on a long journey, especially as the camping in the showground is free (there are hot showers) and the Bowling Club and its excellent bistro are right next door. There are cafés and a pub further along.
Participants in Camp Creative can stay in the Bellingen Showground, the only camping ground in town. It was amazing luxury to replace the old "tent in a cowshed" routine by slinging my hammock to the railings and relaxing. This year (my eighth in succession) I drifted between classes in mokulito (Japanese wood lithography) and Chinese brush painting.
Wingello State Forest could have been noisy on New Year's Eve, seeing how it's website claimed 50 free campsites. However there were fewer than a dozen taken and everyone was as quiet as a mouse. We stayed three nights, and received a warm welcome when we visited the beautiful Santi Monastery near Bundanoon.
