It's just over an hour up the M1 motorway to Newcastle, so why not spend three days getting there, and two coming home? I wanted to explore the part of the forest just south of where I was last month, so set a course for the Jilliby Lookout. When the asphalt finished I decided to go another time, after the dirt road has been regraded. I needed to think again, and headed for the Yarramalong Valley, which advertises various country tourist attractions and would surely have somewhere nice to stay. Before long I realised I was in danger of looping back to Mangrove Mountain and home: so I thought yet again: but not before noting that I needed to take Alison and Luka there sometime! I took the line of least resistance and headed for the coast. I stayed at Budgewoi Holiday Park (slide show above) on the southern edge of Lake Munmorah with Loi on Bertha's first trip, but because it was a rushed overnight stop then I didn't appreciate how nice it is. (Like the Patonga Camping Ground, it's even run by the Central Coast Council.) I came back down the coast as well, and investigated the Munmorah State Conservation Area (slide show below) where the camping is controlled by NSW National Parks. The Fraser Campground, was disappointing, more suitable for surfers, but just south behind Birdie Beach, Freemans Campground was sheltered and, although full, wasn't as busy as it appears in the website photos. I used my phone to book into the last available site for one night. Both the Holiday Park and Freemans are good places to stay again, and the State Conservation Area merits more investigation. They are only 45 minutes from home.
